Flor pilates studio
Task:
Maximize a 300 square meter open-plan shell to house a full-scale pilates studio featuring a reception, small kitchen and dedicated changing facilities with lockers.
Challenge:
Integrating 20 pilates reformers within a given footprint and without sacrificing the ‘airy’, boutique feel essential to the pilates experience, while still keeping the space modular for various events that could be held there.
The Process:
We analyzed the business’s long-term operational needs and future scalability. By prioritizing spatial ergonomics and sightlines, we mapped out movement patterns to create a layout that works as hard as the athletes using it and ensured the floor plan remained intuitive even at peak capacity when designing the final space with focus on seamless flow between a welcoming reception, full-service amenities (wardrobe, bathrooms, kitchen), and a high-capacity workout zone.
It was important to keep the dividers between the dedicated workout space and the lounge and changing area movable, so that the spaces could be changed up depending on the studio’s needs: add more reformers and workout gear if necessary, or move the dividers so the lounge area can become bigger if an event would be held in the space.
The Result:
The result of the process is a bespoke modular layout featuring integrated storage and a neutral palette to maximize perceived volume, with smart zoning and acoustic treatments that separate the workout from the lounge area. Basi pilates philosophy doesn’t allow for mirrors in the workout area (workouts should be more focused on the inner workings of the muscles and breathing) so a custom made, branded wallpaper was designed for this part of the space. The lounge area’s focus was to become a space for socialising and a pre-or-post-workout coffee, which was achieved with different, cozy seating clusters scattered around the space. The only walled off area of the space are the changing rooms with colourful lockers in brand colours.
The whole studio now works successfully as a multifunctional space and is used, apart from the daily pilates reformer classes, as a meeting and event space.
